Social media and email marketing should be on every small business owner’s toolkit because they provide you with a very cost effective way to reach your target audience. But in order to be successful in engaging with your audience using these tools, you need to be relevant. One of the ways you can do that is by talking about what they’re thinking about.
Knowing what matters to your target audience will make your content valuable and your brand relatable. They’ll feel like you’re on the same wavelength. If they’re a past customer, they’re more likely to purchase from you again. And if they’re “meeting” your brand for the first time, this could be the start of something good!
So what’ happening in October that interests your audience? Four monthly themes will be on people’s minds:
Fall and Halloween
The first thing that comes to mind when you think about October is fall festivals and Halloween. This gives you a great opportunity to create a photo contest! You can go with best costume. Or you can get creative and go for best decked out pumpkin, cutest baby costume or most creative car decoration. The great thing about having a contest is that it helps you grow both your fan and subscriber base. Tools like Hootsuite Campaigns make it easy to share your contest on social media and also capture email addresses.
Football, Basketball and the World Series
Sports also take center stage with the beginning of basketball and the World Series. Of course, football started in September, so that’s on the table too. This offers you a great opportunity to connect with your sports-minded fans. You can create great promotions and events around their favorite games.
Breast Cancer Awareness
Soon you’ll see pink ribbons everywhere as individuals and companies join in fundraising efforts. How can you get your brand involved? You can work with a local charity to host a fundraising event at your location, or create a promotion that gives back to the charity with every purchase.
Hispanic Heritage Month is September 15th through October 15th. This is a great opportunity to connect with your Hispanic fans and customers. This demographic is rapidly growing, representing more than 18% of the population with a buying power of more than $1.3 trillion. Get to know them and learn what they’re passionate about.
These are all major themes for the month. But there are also some other holidays going on that can work for your particular audience. For more ideas, check out the infographic below. While it’s mostly focused on October, it gives you a quick glance at November through January too!
